Crime Prevention Tips

Identity Theft has emerged as a very profitable criminal enterprise with the numbers of its victims increasing dramatically each year. The following are a few tips that may keep you from being the next victim:

• Shred all important personal documents such as credit card receipts and bills which contain account numbers, any documents which contain your social security number or other personal information.
• If a need exists to keep these documents, keep them in a locked container.
• Do not give any personal or account information to anyone by telephone or in person unless you know who the information is going to. Do not give any person or account information to anyone by email or by internet
• Encrypt any account or personal information kept within computer systems. Require password access. DO NOT use maiden names, mother’s maiden name, dates of birth, etc. as a password
• Immediately report any theft of this information or attempt to gain this information by deception to the police

Home Protection:

Doors and Locks

• Fit all outside doors with deadbolt lock systems
• All outside door hinges should be sturdy and secured with the best long screws
• Glass doors or patio doors are very vulnerable to unauthorized entry should be fitted with a top and bottom security lock to prevent the lifting of the frame from its track
• Quality locks should be used even if costly. Consider them as insurance.

Windows – Most unauthorized entry is gained through windows

• Ensure all windows are equipped with quality window locking systems and that these locks are used
• Ensure all windows are equipped with curtains or blinds which can be completely closed. Not only do these systems stop someone from peering into windows from the outside, but many blinds also make noise when someone tries to pass through and are difficult to get around by someone entering through an equipped window which has been broken. This makes unauthorized entry much more difficult.

All of the above assist in preventing you from becoming a victim of crime, however the best protection for your home and property is a quality burglar alarm system which is remotely monitored 24 hours a day
